Governor Kathy Hochul has announced that New York has issued nearly 0 million in food assistance to more than 1.5 million low-income children as part of the new Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer (Summer EBT) program. This initiative aims to address food insecurity among children from disadvantaged families during the summer months when school meals are not available.

Empowering Families, Nourishing Futures

Addressing the Needs of Economically Disadvantaged Youth

In Chautauqua County alone, over 10,500 youth, or more than 62% of those enrolled in the 18 school districts, are classified as economically disadvantaged. These alarming statistics reflect the widespread challenge of food insecurity faced by children across the state. By launching the Summer EBT program, New York is taking a proactive step to ensure that these vulnerable children have access to healthy, nutritious meals during the summer months when school-based feeding programs are not in session.

Delivering 0 per Child to Eligible Families

The Summer EBT program provides 0 per child to eligible families, allowing them to purchase healthy food options and alleviate the financial burden of providing meals during the summer break. This federal initiative, which New York has opted to participate in, is designed to support efforts to address food insecurity among children from low-income households. The state has secured million in its FY 2025 Enacted Budget to support the distribution of these benefits throughout New York.

Automatic Enrollment and Application Process

Most children who are eligible for the Summer EBT program, including recipients of SNAP, Temporary Assistance, or Medicaid, will automatically receive the benefits without the need to apply. These families were notified of their eligibility through a letter sent earlier this summer. Additionally, other eligible families can apply to receive the benefits for their children by meeting the income requirements for free or reduced-price school meals and attending a school that participates in the National School Lunch Program.

Ensuring Widespread Access and Participation

Governor Hochul's announcement of the Summer EBT program's implementation in New York underscores the state's commitment to addressing food insecurity and supporting the well-being of low-income children. By leveraging federal funding and streamlining the enrollment process, the state aims to maximize the reach and impact of this initiative, ensuring that as many as 2 million children across New York can access the much-needed food assistance during the summer months.

Collaborative Efforts and Advocacy

The launch of the Summer EBT program in New York is the result of collaborative efforts between state and federal officials, as well as local advocates and community organizations. U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer played a crucial role in securing the federal funding for this initiative, recognizing the importance of addressing food insecurity among children during the summer. Governor Hochul's announcement, made alongside Representative Dan Goldman, highlights the state's dedication to leveraging available resources and partnerships to support families in need.
